Les Revenants - picture disc update

Back in October, the initial announcement of Mogwai's involvement with Les Revenants included the following snippet:
We're looking at doing a very limited France-only picture disc EP release in December to co-incide with the series.
This is the 10" ep which will now be released on 28th January, but not as a picture disc:
The pressing plant couldn’t deliver in time. Just doing it as a normal release now.
Thanks Stuart.

Les Revenants - release dates and artwork

From http://www.facebook.com/mogwai:
Morning,
You might have heard us mention over the past few months that we've been in the studio. We've been working on music for the brand new show on Canal+ 'Les Revenants'. The first episode airs tonight at 20:55.

We're pleased to announce that we'll be releasing music from the show early next year. We'll have a strictly limited 10" (2000 only worldwide) out on January 28th and a full OST album released 25th February on CD, LP and Digital Download via Rock Action Records. You can see artwork for the 10" below.

CONFINED (to the past?)

CONFINED; AN EXPERIMENT IN 'TOTAL CURATING' | NEST, DEN HAAG

Adam Dix / Andre Kruysen / Alex Haw/atmos / Blue Curry
Darren Harvey-Regan / Jan Maarten Voskuil / Kite & Laslett / Mogwai
Mikey Please / Ross Jones / Russell Hill / Sinta Tantra
22nd November from 6pm. ONE NIGHT ONLY.

Location: NEST, De Constant Rebecqueplein 20b, 2518 RA Den Haag, NETHERLANDS

A guest curated project by William Lunn.

Further details here: http://www.sumarrialunn.com/Exhibitions/NEST.html

Artist / architect duo Kite and Laslett will present 'Enclosure' with music by Mogwai - a sound and light installation that creates a sense of physical boundaries via the oral and visual senses. Glaswegian musicians Mogwai are well known for creating incredible 'walls of sound' but also for tapping into emotional experiences such as the passing of time or nostalgia, with music that contains no discernible vocals.

Thanks to Mark Smith for emailing with the info, saving me hours of fruitless trawling through Twitter.

Further trawling on http://www.kiteandlaslett.com/:

E N C L O S U R E - Double CD Release
Privately released by Kite & Laslett, on sale for £10 at IN SITU - Genius Loci and by email request.

The last three tracks from this CD are on http://soundcloud.com/kiteandlaslett and don't sound, to me, like they're anything to do with Mogwai.

The concept of the installation is the design of an immersive sound and light installation. E N C L O S U R E consists of four suspended pyramidal volumes, arranged concentrically around the central node of the exhibition space. Each volume serves to emit sound and light towards the centre in a manner in which inner and outer spatial areas are defined and separated. Standing at the node, the participants are blinded by light, thus focusing their perception towards sound. The projected sounds pass from one volume to the next, creating a dissonant and ever evolving sound field. Standing in the path of the moving sounds a kinaesthetic sensation of sound is passed through the human body. The piece will be the only source of lighting in the space providing a dramatic ambience. In addition to the installation itself, this special event includes live sound mixing, guest musical performance and audience participation.

All of which suggests that Enclosure is an entirely live experience and that the contributing music artists change every time it's shown?

Educated guesswork suggests that previously-released Mogwai music was used when Enclosure was shown in Den Haag on Thursday. Further info very much welcome, from anyone involved in the project or anyone who was there.

Mogwai - forthcoming releases

Mogwai have been working on the soundtrack for French TV series Les Revenants, and this is now completed, mastered and due for release early in 2013.

Apparently Happy Songs For Happy People is being reissued soon although it's not known at this stage whether this is a full-on 'extra track and a tacky badge' job or just a vinyl re-press.

Any further info on either of these very welcome.

Update:
PIAS are reissuing some back catalogue on vinyl and download to mark their 30th anniversary:

Deafheaven "Punk Rock"/"Cody" (Mogwai Covers)

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/14408-punk-rockcody/

Two of my favorite Bay Area black metal groups, Bosse-de-Nage and Deafheaven, teamed up for a split 12", out November 20 on the Flenser (it can be pre-ordered now). For Side A, Deafheaven covered "Punk Rock" and "Cody", the opening songs from Mogwai's Come on Die Young, the Scottish band's 1999 album featuring black metal-esque cover art and sentiments. The selection's a great fit for Deafheaven, who have a way with extended post-rock hauntings.

Les Revenants - Mogwai soundtrack French TV show

As you may know if you follow any of us on Twitter, we've been in the studio recently. These sessions have been due to our involvement in preparing the soundtrack for a French TV show due to be broadcast on Canal+ called "Les Revenants". The first episode of which will air in France on November 26th. Rock Action will be releasing a soundtrack album featuring music from the series in early 2013, while we're looking at doing a very limited France-only picture disc EP release in December to co-incide with the series. Expect to hear a lot more about this in the coming months.

Update: some further info on the series:

A Wrenched Virile Lore - vinyl editions

Some confusion exists around the coloured vinyl edition of Mogwai's forthcoming remix album 'A Wrenched Virile Lore'

I'd like to clarify the Rock Action version of the remix record release will ONLY be on standard vinyl and NOT coloured. It seems there's been a few crossed wires with the UK press release that went out. They were supplied with the Sub Pop press release for reference and unfortunately have applied their release details as ours (the 19th is the correct release date). A coloured vinyl release has never been on our agenda for this release.

Rock Action Will release on CD, standard 2xLP and Digital Download 19th November.
Sub Pop will release on ltd coloured vinyl (2500 only) on 23rd November and CD and Digital on 4th December. The coloured vinyl is for Black Friday in the States.

Thanks Craig

Mogwai play Mexico City as a four-piece

Mogwai played last night's show in Mexico City as a four-piece. Stuart, Dominic and Barry were joined by James Hamilton (Errors) on drums. Martin and John were unable to leave the USA due to visa issues.

Presumably normality will be restored when Mogwai appear in Atlanta on 8th June, and for the remaining US dates. The run of US shows is broken by two shows in Canada later this month, although Mogwai have already managed to successfully cross the US-Canadian border once on this tour.

I stand to be corrected on this, but I believe this is the first time Mogwai have performed as a four-piece since 23rd September 1998 (Hereford, UK) - the last gig before Barry joined permanently. Unless any of the Curiosa shows in 2004 were four-piece line-ups due to John's illness?
Last night is also the first time Mogwai have ever played live without both Martin and John.

Occupy This Album released - lossless downloads?

As Mogwai noted on their Facebook page, Occupy This Album, the 4-CD compilation benefiting the Occupy movement, was released this week. The album includes the previously-unreleased Mogwai track 'Earth Division'.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to buy lossless downloads of this compilation on a track-by-track basis, and if so where from? I'm sure I'm not the only person who has no interest in cluttering up the house with a compilation I'll never listen to, but I would be more than happy to pay a premium to get hold of the tracks I want to hear in lossless format.

Hudson River Project - Crook/Bowthorpe/Mogwai

From mogwai.co.uk:

Hudson River Project

An Epic Recycled Kayak Ride Down New York's Great Waterway Soundtracked by Mogwai

Round-the-world cycling champion and adventure junky James Bowthorpe reunites with filmmaker Antony Crook to launch their latest audacious endeavor: rowing a boat constructed from New York’s refuse down the 315-mile length of the Hudson River. Today’s trailer was filmed over the course of several scouting missions to chart a route from the waterway’s highest source at Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondack Mountains, down through the Hudson River Valley and into Manhattan. “We see cities as something separate from the wilderness, but the former evolved from the latter. I’m interested in the idea of how we set up these diametrically opposed state of minds,” Bowthorpe explains. “The Hudson River Project plays to this cyclic idea, charting the path that helped to build the megalopolis.” The full-length feature, which will be set to an original soundtrack by Scottish rock maestros Mogwai and starts filming this fall, will follow Bowthorpe collecting discarded materials and assembling his vessel before hauling the boat to the journey’s starting point on his bike. Having completed a similar journey along the Thames in London, the Hudson River’s long stretches of treacherous white water will pose new challenges for Bowthorpe, who has enlisted survival expert and outdoorsman Phil Wrigley to ghost him on the trip.

Watch the trailer here: http://www.nowness.com/day/2012/4/10/2037/hudson-river-project

Visit the Facebook page for an exclusive album of photos by Antony Crook taken during the scouting missions.
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150716569277454.425225.200226622453&type=3

The Kickstarter page for the project is here:
http://www.kickstarter.com/profile/hrp

So this one will feature new Mogwai music.

Even for me, $75 for a Mogwai 12" seems a bit steep? Hopefully the music will be made available to buy at a more reasonable price at some point.

Update: the soundtrack will also be available through Rock Action after the project is completed.

Autism Awareness - Ben & Finlay

We've run several stories previously on Ben and Finlay, the autistic twins Mogwai have supported with items for auction in the last couple of years.

World Autism Day was on 2nd April, and Autism Awareness continues throughout April.

An update from Mike Stevens:

Ben and Finlay invite you all to join them in celebrating World Autism Day on 02 April 2012 and Light It Up Blue to help to shine a light on autism! Whether it be big or small, the whole world is going blue to increase awareness!

Light It Up Blue, in its third year, is a unique global initiative to help raise awareness about the growing public health concern that is autism. Iconic landmarks around the world will Light It Up Blue to show their support.

Join us now and help shine a light on autism.

Why should we care?

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. Currently, one in 100 people are affected by this condition. The needs of those with an autistic spectrum condition still remain largely misunderstood. Many suppose that an approach that works well with one group of individuals with additional support needs will work well for all.

Who are we targeting?

Autism affects both children and adults alike. Raising awareness of autism will make it easier for families affected by this condition. The difficulties that many people with autism experience within services are often due to a lack of a clear and consistent understanding of their needs and wants over multiple environments.

We have already told you about our good friends, Patty and Bill Peek from St Ignace in Michigan, who have bought a blue bulb in Ben and Finlay’s honour to form part of the lighting up of the Mackinac Bridge. This is the third longest suspension bridge in the world and joins the upper and lower peninsulas of the state of Michigan. The bridge will be lit for the whole month of April.

Across the globe in New Zealand, we are delighted that Kyla and Callum Brown, twins to good friend Terry, have taken Ben and Finlay’s story to an autism fundraising event at Otatara School down under. They have made up a story board about the boys with text and pictures taken from their blog and shared it with their classmates. Thanks so much guys for thinking of us all those miles away!

The future?

Our aim is to look to a future where the unique differences of individuals with Autism Spectrum Condition are recognised and respected and there is meaningful participation and choice in all aspects of life for them, their families and their carers.

PLEASE spread the word…….support us all to a brighter and better future!

Knock For Knock - Crook/Bowthorpe/Mogwai

The (full?) version of Antony Crook's 'Knock For Knock' film, featuring Mogwai's 'Drunk And Crazy', can be found here:

http://www.rapha.cc/knock-for-knock

Shot in Tokyo by Antony Crook, and featuring a soundtrack from Mogwai, Rapha and RSA Films present Knock for Knock. With a script written by long distance cyclist James Bowthorpe, Knock for Knock is a human interest story that depicts a sportsman’s fight against his inner demons.

James Bowthorpe cycled around the globe in 176 days in 2009, a feat which challenged him both mentally and physically. A chance meeting between Crook and Bowthorpe’s girlfriend lead to their first collaboration, the film 30 Century Man. The evolution to Knock For Knock was quite natural:

“From my initial inspiration for the central character to Antony’s casting masterstroke… Rapha and Mogwai’s involvement clinched it. We wanted to make a kind of sequel to 30 Century Man, but something that turns away from the infinite horizon and looks inwards, towards fear and fighting it. There is a bike in it, but it’s not about that.”

Since 2011 Antony Crook has worked extensively with the Glaswegian band Mogwai, shooting the cover artwork and photography for their album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. The band have amassed a cult following and the whispering brutality of their song ‘Drunk and Crazy’, taken from the EP Earth Division, lends itself beautifully to the film.

Mogwai confirm new soundtrack

From http://www.clashmusic.com/news/antony-crook-mogwai-project:

Antony Crook / MogwaiProject - Film score confirmed

Mogwai are set to unveil a brand new collaboration with visual artist Antony Crook.

Mogwai have always had a deeply visual element to their music. The absence of lyrics just seems to trigger something in the imagination, with their output being used as an inspiration for frequent arts projects.

Now Antony Crook has teamed up with the band for a new collaboration. 'Mogwai Japan: Knock For Knock' is a new selection of photos taken by Crook when travelling with the band during a Japanese tour.

The pair have a close relationship, with the photographer having taken the shot which adorns the band's 2011 album 'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will'. Showcased in KK Outlet throughout April, the images closely match Mogwai's studio output with the two sharing a similar sense of quiet intensity.

Opening with a private viewing at KK Outlet on April 5th, there will then be a private event at Hoxton Bar & Grill in which the audience can see Antony Crook chat with Mogwai lynchpin Stuart Braithwaite.

Discussing their project, the pair will then present 'Knock For Knock' a new film shot in Japan which features a Mogwai soundtrack.

As a special bonus, the event will also witness the unveiling of an exclusive collaborative feature film project with world record-breaking cyclist James Bowthorpe. Featuring an original soundtrack from Mogwai, the project marks the band's first score since their acclaimed work on 'Zidane'.

Tickets are limited to 2 per person - grab them HERE:
http://kkoutlet.eventbrite.com/

A reminder, if one is needed, that Antony Crook shot the stunning cycling footage used to accompany 'How To Be A Werewolf' at Mogwai shows over the last year.

Update - from Mogwai's Facebook page:

Event in London next month on April 5th to open a new exhibition of photographs by Antony Crook of Mogwai in Japan last year. There will also be the premiere of a new short film by Antony with Mogwai's music, discussion with Antony and Stuart and a dj set by Stuart. The event is free. Please come along.

Photographer Antony Crook and Stuart Braithwaite of Scottish band Mogwai present their collaborative films to date and unveil an exciting new feature length film project.

After the opening event of Crook's photography work at KK Outlet, we will host an exclusive screening event at Hoxton Bar & Grill.

Here the audience will have the opportunity to see Crook in conversation with Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai, as they talk about their collaborations and present for the first time Knock for Knock, a film made with RSA Films and Rapha, featuring a staggering Mogwai score.

Knock for Knock follows a man played by boxer Nao Tsuchiyama, cycling through downtown Tokyo. Through his narration, a tale unfolds—a beautiful follow up to Crook’s 30 Century Man, Crooks first film with Mogwai.

Also at this event, Crook and Braithwaite will unveil an exclusive collaborative feature film project with world record-breaking cyclist James Bowthorpe.

Two further US tour dates

From mogwai.co.uk:
Two new shows have been added to the US tour for June. Dates are below and tickets are on sale March 16th at 10am EST.

10th June: Jefferson Theatre - Charlottesville, VA
19th June: Crofoot Ballroom - Pontiac, MI

http://tix.concertmaps.com/mogwai/

Meaning presumably that Mogwai's Bonnaroo appearance must be scheduled for 9th June, as it's now the only unfilled date in that area?

Both of these new dates have Balam Acab listed as support. Chad VanGaalen is supporting on the west coast dates (Portland to Solana Beach), with Balam Acab taking over from Atlanta onwards, although there are still some gaps in east coast support details (NYC, Boston for example). Further info welcome.

In an article for The Skinny in 2008, Barry Burns of Mogwai stated that De Rosa were a big influence on Mogwai, saying that their last album Prevention was "a great achievement and very inspiring to me".

Henry has toured and collaborated with many of Scotland's finest creatives, including Mogwai, Malcolm Middleton and King Creosote. In 2007 Henry collaborated with author Michel Faber on the critically lauded Ballads of the Book compilation (Chemikal Underground, 2007), and in 2009 he contributed a cover of The Beatles' Because to MOJO's Abbey Road Now! Featuring remixes from amongst others; The Phantom Band, Dam Mantle, Ben Butler and Mousepad, Found and The Twilight Sad you’ll be able to pick up the record for a fiver on their live dates with Errors which start next week. Full release due in March.

It's a real privilege to have had such talents re-work our music and stamp their own individuality on the tracks, from the more beat-driven versions of “John Candy” and “One Happier” by Ben Butler & Mousepad and grnr respectively, to the spaghetti western shuffle incorporated into “Hey Zeus, courtesy of FOUND and the foreboding industrial pulse of The Twilight Sad's take on “White Castle”, not to mention the ambient washes of Enoch Point's “Scottish Widows” remix and Dam Mantle's pulsing, hypnotic overhaul of “Ocean Potion”. Plus a stunning version of “Unclean Powers”, remixed to dizzying effect by The Phantom Band.

North American tour dates confirmed - May/June 2012

From http://www.mogwai.co.uk/:
Mogwai - US Tour 2012

Hello all and a happy new year.

2011 was a great year for us releasing our Hardcore Will Never Die album and playing 124 shows (our busiest ever). We were constantly surprised and grateful for the support we received throughout both through people coming to see us play all over the world and the goodwill shown towards our record. The only blemish on an otherwise brilliant year was us twice having to postpone shows in North America. Firstly because of a visa delay and secondly because of ill health.

We can’t apologise enough to the people who arranged travel and bought tickets to see us. Both of these postponements were completely out with our control and the shows would not have been postponed if there was anyway possible to make them happen. That said we realise fully how disappointed people were who had bought tickets only to find out very close to the shows that we were postponing. In light of this we are very happy to announce the rescheduled dates along with new dates for next May and June. It will likely be the last extensive touring we do for some time so we hope it will be a very special tour.

Tickets people still have for the original Boston and Washington DC shows will be honoured at the door.

Thanks for your patience!

New York - 14th and 15th June 2012

From brooklynvegan:
Post-rock giants Mogwai will make up for their cancelled Webster Hall appearances surrounding ATP with a pair of new ones at the venue, scheduled for June 14th and 15th.
This lends further credibility to the Bonnaroo appearance, and to the Washington DC date having apparently been rescheduled for 11th June.

Mogwai US dates - June 2012?

Extensive rumours circulating online put Mogwai amongst the line-up for Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (Manchester, TN - 7th to 10th June), with the twice-postponed US dates in Washington, New York, Philadelphia and Boston likely to be rescheduled for around the same time. Confirmation as we get it.

Errors cover New Order and give stuff away

The February 2012 edition of Mojo magazine includes a covermount CD with various folks covering tracks from New Order's 'Power Corruption & Lies' album. Amongst the contributors, Errors have turned in a great version of 'The Village'. Hopefully they're busy rehearsing this for their forthcoming UK tour.

Tracks from the covermount CD can be sampled here:
