Stuart Braithwaite solo show - 19th December 2013

Stuart played at the Union Chapel in London last night (Thurs 19th Dec 2013) supporting James Yorkston. The set included at least six Mogwai songs and a couple of cover versions.

Most (all?) of Stuart's set is on YouTube, filmed close in by the same uploader and with decent audio quality.

Rave Tapes - Sub Pop pre-order (and likely future ep)

The Sub Pop pre-order for Mogwai's 'Rave Tapes' box set is up:
http://www.subpop.com/releases/mogwai/full_lengths/rave_tape_deluxe_box_set

That's a pretty-looking thing.

The Sub Pop boxset has its own catalogue number [SP1079] and the write-up states "The deluxe edition box set will be housed in a hardcover box case featuring unique-to-this-package artwork, and will be limited to only 500 copies. Which is to say, it’s not going to last long!"

And more from Stuart on the forum:
We have some more songs which we'll be releasing as an ep at some point. There aren't any plans for singles from the album at the moment though that could change if we get any great remixes.

Rave Tapes bonus 7" - update

Stuart has confirmed via the forum that the 'Rave Tapes' boxset 7", the Sub Pop bonus 7" and the Rock Action indies-only bonus 7" all contain one song only - 'Tell Everybody That I Love Them '.

The boxset 7" will have an etched b-side, unlike the other two pressings.

Barry interviewed on Rave Tapes

http://echoesanddust.com/2013/11/interview-barry-burns-of-mogwai/

Well worth reading, some interesting comment on the new album.

"I have a feeling that 7 straight weeks in the USA is really going to take its toll on us" - the currently-announced North American tour runs for five weeks, which suggests a substantial extension is yet to be announced.

'Rave Tapes' format tracklisting update

Boxset tracklists:
Heavy pressed die cut LP/CD/cassette

Heard About You Last Night
Simon Ferocious
Remurdered
Hexon Bogon
Repelish
Master Card
Deesh
Blues Hour
No Medicine For Regret
The Lord Is Out Of Control

plus:
Exclusive heavy pressed 12" coloured vinyl (pink):
A - Bad Magician 3 (3:32)
B - Die 1 Dislike! (5:26)

1 sided heavy pressed etched 7"
A - Tell Everybody That I Love Them (4:28)

Printed download card for high quality download of all tracks contained in box

============================================

The Sub Pop pre-order states "You’ll also receive a bonus 7" with two extra songs with your pre-order of Rave Tapes", so this is a different 7" to that included in the boxset.
It's not currently clear whether the Sub Pop bonus 7" has the same tracklist as the 7" included with the UK/European indies-only vinyl.

Update - Stuart has confirmed that the bonus 7" will have the same tracklist across all formats.

To muddy the water still further, the Japanese CD [Hostess Entertainment HSE-30324] will have bonus tracks - some pre-orders suggest two additional tracks. Again, it's not yet known whether these bonus tracks are duplicated in the boxset or other formats.

This could get very, very expensive....

Dingle - 6th to 8th December 2013

From http://dingle2013.othervoices.ie/:
Other Voices Series 12

December 6th, 7th and 8th 2013 will see Other Voices head to Dingle for it’s 12th year. The recording of the world-renowned music television event will take place in St. James’ Church, Dingle.

In keeping with a musical tradition nurtured in Dingle over eleven years, Other Voices will showcase the most influential voices in contemporary music – established artists and bands from across the globe performing alongside the ever burgeoning wave of emerging talent. Old friends will return and new friendships will be forged. Some of those returning to the fold will be DAVID GRAY, and IMRO Other Room alum LISA O’NEILL will be joining us on the main stage. We are also excited to be joined by Scottish post-rockers, MOGWAI. The full line-up for Other Voices will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Once again Other Voices will be providing a TV and online platform for new and emerging acts in the IMRO Other Room. Anyone who wishes to apply for a slot to perfrom the IMRO Other Room can do so by visting the Open Call section on www.othervoices.ie.

Other Voices Dingle will again feature the hugely popular Other Voices Music Trail, with a stellar line-up of musical offerings in a number of venues across the weekend. All Other Voices Music Trail events are free and will take place before and after the live gigs in St. James’. Familiar names will perform alongside emerging Irish artists and no doubt there will be a few very special guests along the way! This year also sees the return of Banter, a salon style series of discussion and debate with Irish Times Music Journalist, Jim Carroll (www.thisisbanter.com).

As always, tickets for the main Church recordings will be very limited but don’t let that put you off coming down to Dingle for the weekend. You will not be disappointed by the huge range of other gigs, talks and festivities we have in store for Other Voices 12. Also, for those who don’t make it into the church, the live action will be streamed in bars around the town as well as online.

The capacity for Mogwai's show is 80. Date tbc. All tickets are given away. Links to ticket sources will be posted on http://dingle2013.othervoices.ie/

What Are They Doing In Heaven Today promo

This turned up on ebay at the end of last week - promo CD, seemingly for a proposed physical and digital single release of the Les Revenants track 'What Are They Doing In Heaven?' earlier this year.

MOGWAI –‘WHAT ARE THEY DOING IN HEAVEN TODAY?’ SINGLE
PHYSICAL RELEASE: 25/02, DIGITAL RELEASE: 24/02

Tracklisting:
1. What Are They Doing In Heaven Today?
2. Wizard Motor

Mogwai releases new single What Are They Doing In Heaven Today? through Rock Action Records. Mogwai are Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison, Martin Bullock, John Cummings and Barry Burns, formed in Glasgow in 1995. New track What Are You Doing In Heaven Today? is a cover version of a Washington Phillips song by Braithwaite and is released with b-side Wizard Motor. Both tracks are taken from the band’s newest project, the soundtrack of the French TV series Les Revenants. The series is adapted from the eponymously titled, Robin Campillo-directed 2004 film, and the series unfolds in an isolated French mountain town where the locals are troubled after children who were tragically killed in a bus crash appear to come back to life, unaware that they’d died. The soundtrack to Les Revenant is set for release on 25/02.

Update - seem the seller has a ready supply, it's already been relisted

Mogwai vs Kanye West

(via Consequence Of Sound)
Kanye West is (for those just emerging from under their rocks) one of the most vocal and progressive talents in modern rap. Mogwai is a Scottish-based quintet known for their lengthy, heavily distorted brand of instrumental post-rock. Now, those two dichotomous worlds come together at last thanks to a new mash-up from Chicago production duo The Hood Internet (who know a thing or two about the ways of the mash-up.)

“Tu Ne Peux Rien Me Dire” pairs West’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” vocals with an unnamed Mogwai piano-and-drum piece. The resulting track is like a musical Reese’s cup, with West’s boisterous rhymes given a sheen of darkness while the brooding instrumentation sounds more playful underneath West’s rampant charisma.

'Rave Tapes' press release

Sub Pop have released further info on the various formats for the new Mogwai album 'Rave Tapes', and their full press release.
(Sub Pop, you have a typo on your website which says the album was released 9 months ago - thanks Mark)

===================================================

Rave Tapes is the eighth studio album by Mogwai and their second on Rock Action, the label they set up almost 18 years ago to issue their debut 7in single, Tuner/Lower. In between, the Scottish quintet have established themselves on the international stage through a prolific recorded output and a commitment to touring that few of their peers can match.

Clocking in at just under 50 minutes, the 10-track album is a lustrous collection mined from the same quarry as its predecessors, wreathed in painterly textures underpinned by increasingly electronic beats. The haunted strains of Deesh channel the slow-burning ecstasy of their 2006 song “Auto Rock” (a key presence in the denouement of Michael Mann’s film of Miami Vice that year) while the guitars on which Mogwai built their reputation remain, if for the most part less overtly belligerent this time round, as evidenced by the somnambulant opener “Heard About You Last Night” and the sonic scowl of “Hexon Bogon”. With Rave Tapes, Mogwai’s mastery of sound and space is firmly at its apex.

Created in summer 2013 in the band’s Castle Of Doom studio in Glasgow, the record marks the latest phase in the group’s increasingly substantial canon – since the dawn of this decade, Mogwai have released four full-length records, one live album, two EPs and three singles. Factor in a pancontinental live schedule in support of one of those albums, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, plus myriad festival appearances and you get a sense of how much of themselves the members of Mogwai invest in their work.

In the past year alone the band have broadened their reach with the soundtrack to the acclaimed Canal+ supernatural drama series Les Revenants (retitled The Returned when broadcast on Channel 4 in summer 2013, averaging 1.8m viewers a week across its eight episodes). As the show reached its climax on UK TV screens in July, Mogwai returned to the most conspicuous predecessor to Les Revenants in their catalogue, the 2007 soundtrack to Douglas Gordon and Philippe Pareno’s film Zidane: A 21st-century Portrait, in sell-out performances in Manchester, Glasgow and London’s Barbican, the band playing live while the film was projected above them.

Mogwai are Dominic Aitchison (bass), Stuart Braithwaite (guitar, vocals), Martin Bulloch (drums), Barry Burns (keyboard, computer, guitar) and John Cummings (guitar, computer). They formed in Glasgow in 1995 as a quartet, with Burns yet to come into the fold. After a succession of well-received releases and having developed a reputation for their fearsome live shows, Mogwai signed to Glasgow independent Chemikal Underground, with whom they released their debut long-player Mogwai Young Team (1997) and its follow-up, Come On Die Young (1999), recorded in upstate New York with Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips) and the first Mogwai album to feature Burns.

At the turn of the millennium Mogwai left Chemikal Underground to sign with PIAS, in large part for its European network, and in 2001 released Rock Action, reaching No23 in the UK album chart. Again produced by Fridmann, the record found the group introducing more electronic tones to their palette, a broadening of scope furthered on Happy Songs For Happy People (2003), the album that saw the band making substantial progress in the US.

Aside from Government Commissions, 2005’s compilation of BBC radio sessions, almost three years would pass before Mogwai’s fifth studio full-length, Mr Beast (2006), saw the light of day. Co-produced by the band and Tony Doogan (the sole producer of Happy Songs), Mr Beast was described by the band’s then manager Alan McGee as “probably the best art rock album I’ve been involved with since [My Bloody Valentine’s] Loveless”. A year later, Mogwai released their soundtrack to Zidane: A 21st-century Portrait, and a further 12 months on came the release of the band’s first album away from PIAS and their first entirely self-produced long-player, The Hawk Is Howling (2008).

The band’s appetite for greater control was not, however, limited to the studio. Having used Rock Action largely as a platform for releases by such artists as Envy, Errors and Part Chimp, in 2010 Mogwai made the decision to issue their own records on the label as well, beginning with Special Moves, the audio counterpart to the live film Burning, both of which featured Mogwai performing in Brooklyn on their 2008-09 US tour. That same year, Mogwai and Matador ended their long relationship and the band signed to Sub Pop ahead of the 2011 release of Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, an expansive, confident set which entered the UK album chart at No25 and spawned three singles. (The recording sessions also yielded the four-track EP Earth Division, the band’s 10th such release.) A year later the album A Wrenched Virile Lore, featuring remixes of songs from Hardcore… by an eclectic array of artists including Justin Broadrick, Tim Hecker and Xander Harris, was released, providing listeners with an entirely new set of perspectives from which to view Mogwai’s increasingly adroit creations.

Having barely had time to draw breath, the ever-restless band members kicked off 2013 with the release of the Les Revenants EP and parent album to keep fans occupied while writing sessions for Rave Tapes took place in Glasgow and Berlin, where Burns moved some years ago with his wife Rachel, an artist. Displaying a work ethic to shame bands of all ages and stripes, Mogwai entered their Castle Of Doom studio in the wake of summer’s live Zidane shows and began making the victorious, beatific tracks that comprise Rave Tapes. The release of the album will signal the beginning of a frantic year of live activity, including the group’s maiden foray into Africa. Fasten your seatbelts.

NOTES

Rave Tapes will be released on CD, LP and DL on January 20, 2014, on Rock Action (UK and Europe) and Sub Pop (North America).

Mogwai - Zidane in Glasgow - 21st July

Mogwai
Performing live to Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait

Sunday 21st July 2013

220 Broomielaw
Broomielaw
Glasgow
G2 8JP

[NB - Ticketweb has the start time as 6pm?]

A film directed by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno

Produced by Sigurjon Sighvatsson, Anna Lena Vaney and Victorien Vaney

Anna Lena films / Palomar Pictures / Love Streams Agnès b. / Arte Cinema

One of the most beguiling portrayals of an individual in recent cinematic history, Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is a football film like no other. Using 17 cameras, the film tracks the legendary French midfielder Zinédine Zidane throughout a 2005 Spanish league match at Madrid’s imposing Bernabéu Stadium — on and off the ball, in the thick of the action and on its periphery. The result, from directors Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, is a dramatic, hypnotic and deeply beautiful depiction of one of the world’s finest footballers performing on one of the sport’s grandest stages. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Mogwai — and for the first time, the band will be performing it live alongside the movie in a series of three UK concerts beginning with the World Premiere of the event at Manchester International Festival ‘13. The Glasgow quintet have built a deserved reputation for the fearsome intensity of their live shows, and this show at the incredible new concert site 220 Broomielaw offers a rare chance to see them in action in a very unique setting.

Twitter RSS feeds R.I.P

Twitter have turned off their support for RSS feeds in the last few days. This means I have no way of keeping up with the various Mogwai-related Twitter accounts - there are workarounds, but I don't have time to set those up at present.

If you use Twitter and have time to keep up with Mogwai on there, I'd recommend doing so as that's where they currently announce most of their activities. The rest of us will have to make do with the sporadic website updates, and hope that Facebook don't turn off their RSS feeds in the near future.

It's likely that this blog will be updated even less frequently than it has been recently, until I get time to work out a convenient way to get this info to come to me rather than having to hunt for it.

I'm seriously considering whether Brightlight needs a news function any more. When Tom started the site in 1998, there was a definite 'gap in the market' - there was an active exchange of information about the band on email groups but no website to back this up. Obviously the situation now is entirely different, as is my domestic and work situation, and it's been increasingly noticeable that Brightlight is not breaking news in the way we once did.

Temporary hiatus or longer break? We'll see.

Stuart on Zidane

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jun/03/mogwai-zidane
Have you played any of the Zidane tracks live before?

Yeah, we've played Black Spider, which is the main theme, and 7:25. But we're going to have to relearn the rest. Which I'm really looking forward to actually, because some of them are very sprawled out and vague and not the kind of thing we'd normally play at a concert.

Are you tempted to embellish them with classic Mogwai crescendos?

Well, it's quite loud already. The film ends with 15 minutes of noise when Zidane gets sent off. It's actually pretty brutal.

Mogwai to close last-ever ATP holiday park festival

http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/news/latest-news/mogwai-to-close-last-ever-atp-holiday-camp-festival:
With All Tomorrows Parties confirming that their upcoming weekend events at Camber Sands in November and December will be their final outings, it’s now been confirmed that Mogwai will be the last band to ever play the holiday camp fests.

Speaking to BBC Radio 6 Music earlier today, organiser Barry Hogan said that it was a natural choice for the band who first curated an ATP festival to close the event.

The Glasgow post-rock outfit headlined and curated the first All Tomorrow’s Parties festival back in April 2000 and will now appear at the Loop leg, taking place between 29 November – 1 December. Tickets for that can be found here.

The first leg of the End of an Era series is to be headlined by Television, held from 22-24 November.

Stuart at Tectonics Festival, Glasgow last night

Stuart played live at Tectonics Glasgow last night (Saturday 11th May) with Aidan Moffat and Hildur Guðnadóttir.

Anyone seen any reviews, photos, video, audio?

Mogwai on Grammys playlist

http://www.grammy365.com/news/explosions-sky-mogwai-and-sigur-ros-have-post-rock-euphoria
Over the past two decades, a curious musical insurgency has raged on the outermost fringes of the international music scene. Dubbed "post-rock," this burgeoning movement was pioneered by ambitious bands who largely discarded vocals and traditional verse-chorus structures in favor of euphoria-inducing song cycles. Now, eccentric outliers such as Canada's Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Scotland's Mogwai, Iceland's Sigur Rós, and Chicago-based Tortoise are increasingly being recognized as rock visionaries.

Stuart on Tectonics Glasgow

Stuart Braithwaite plays alongside Aidan Moffat and Icelandic cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir at Tectonics Glasgow on Saturday 11th May.

http://www.list.co.uk/article/50322-mogwais-stuart-braithwaite-discusses-upcoming-aidan-moffat-collaboration-as-part-of-tectonics/
At the time of writing, these three artists have yet to be seen in the same room together. ‘There’s been some email exchanges and sharing of ideas,’ Braithwaite explains. ‘She’s a really great musician, so I’m excited about that.’ He remains uncertain as to exactly what shape their performance will take, but that’s all part of the fun. ‘It’s going to be at least partially improvised. At this stage I actually don’t have a clue what’s going to happen, which I find quite exciting.’

Les Revenants 10" oversold?

It seems that some outlets may have oversold Mogwai's 'Les Revenants' 10" ep on pre-order, and are now cancelling orders or informing customers that they're waiting to find out whether the ep will be re-pressed.

Here's the Boomkat response to a query regarding an unfulfilled order this week:
The 10" has been officially released but unfortunately we were
massively under shipped on this one. The item is currently out of
stock and I'm waiting to hear from our distributor whether it will be
repressed any time soon.

If you haven't received your pre-order, it might be worth chasing it up. As far as I'm aware at present, there are no plans to re-press the 10" vinyl ep.
