Record Store Day - 16th April 2011

Two Mogwai-related releases slated for Record Store Day:

Various Artists / Terminal Sales Vol. 4: Please to Enjoy - SP932

CD compilation housed in an embossed, die cut case, containing 18 art prints with information about each of the artists and a folded poster.
Includes Mogwai's 'Slight Domestic', the b-side to the 'Mexican Grand Prix' single. The only other place this has appeared on CD is as an extra track on the Japanese edition of 'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will'

Esben And The Witch - Chorea ep

The new single from the dark Brighton-based trio features "Chorea" from the album, backed with two unreleased tracks: a remix of "Eumenides" by Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai, and an alternate take of "Corridors" used in Vice's Creators Project exhibition in London in December 2010.

The Esben And The Witch remix was originally slated for release on mp3 as part of a Japanese freebie promotional ep "Lucia, at the Precipice" - read our earlier post here. The other three mp3s were delivered, but the Mogwai remix doesn't seem to have appeared?

La Route du Rock -12th August

Mogwai play La Route du Rock, St. Malo, France on 12th August 2011.

The festival's website suggests the festival runs from 13th - 15th August, so presumably Mogwai's show is a curtain-raiser?

Paris - 4th July

Noted music hall artistes Mogwai play Folies Bergères, Paris on 4th July 2011. There is a rumour of revealing costumes. 'Hardcore' indeed.

Strasbourg tonight

Comment from a very regular Brightlight correspondent:

Back from Strasbourg. I had to leave early (about 1 hour into
Mogwai's set during "Lionel Richie") after I had realized that I was
actually losing consciousness.

The show had sold out in advance and - from my point of view - the
actual capacity of the venue was exceeded by at least 200-250 people.
People on the pit were packed like sardines in a can and, after a
while, there was no fresh air to breathe anymore. It only took about 5
minutes until the first person, a woman standing to my left, started
hyperventilating and had to leave the venue.

Probably my last show ever at the Laiterie...

Update: Other reports from this show have been generally positive apart from the crowd congestion. 'We're No Here' was played for the first time this year as the last song of the encore.

Mogwai - De Rosa remix (revisited)

From Martin John Henry (formerly of De Rosa) on Twitter:

A brilliant Mogwai remix of one of our songs called Nocturne For An Absentee. It was supposed to be on the single.... http://fb.me/VcMX6WMB

'San Pedro' video

Mogwai - San Pedro from Rock Action on Vimeo.

Video by Antony Crook, 'Hardcore Will Never Die. But You Will' sleeve photographer and director of the '30 Century Man' film, soundtracked by 'How To Be A Werewolf'.

San Pedro is a forthcoming single, apparently. Anyone seen any further info?

Electric Picnic - 4th Sept 2011

Another day, another festival announcement...

Mogwai play Electric Picnic in Stradbally, County Laois, Ireland. The festival takes place over the same weekend as End Of The Road, so it looks likely that Mogwai will play on Sunday 4th September.

Thanks Brian.

Venue changes

Continuing 2011's very welcome pattern of Mogwai being the hot new band on the block, two of this month's German shows have had to be moved to larger venues.

14th March - Cologne - moved from Stollwerk to Live Music Hall
29th March - Berlin - moved from Postbahnhof to Huxleys

Tickets for the original venues remain valid.

Saturday, March 5, 2011

Nimes - 19th July 2011

Mogwai support Portishead at Festival de Nimes in Nimes, France on 19th July 2011.

The show apparently takes place in a Roman amphitheatre. Thanks Kevin.

BBC Rob Da Bank session - after the fact again

As previously noted, Mogwai recorded a session for BBC Radio 1's Rob Da Bank show back in January.

As seems to be the way nowadays, unless you're following exactly the right Twitter account at exactly the right time, it's impossible to find out when these sessions are likely to be broadcast. This one went out on this morning's show (5am - 7am). Listen again via the link above.

Mogwai — Mexican Grand Prix
Mogwai — Hasen Heide

If anyone recorded the FM broadcast, please get in touch.

Video - Mogwai's stage set-up

We met up with the band during soundcheck ahead of their gig at Bristol's O2 Academy and guitarist John Cummings was nice enough to show us around their full stage set up.

http://www.musicradar.com/ also has a 4-minute video of John talking through his pedalboard! Oh yes!

Stuart and Barry review the singles

James Blake – The Wilhelm Scream (7 Mar, Atlas)

Barry: Sounds a wee bit like a South Park parody.
Stuart: (reading press release) What’s this ‘missing link’? Why do we need a fucking missing link between Burial, The XX and Feist? (adopting confused consumer impersonation) ‘I love these three records but... where’s the fucking missing link!? Here it is! Here’s the missing link!’
Barry: Record collection complete.
Stuart: I’m a fan of his music but not his singing. Maybe when his baws drop and he’s got something to sing about...
Barry: (dissolving into hysterics) You can’t say that!
Stuart: I did.

Note photo of Barry in THAT jumper. I wonder if it's been washed?

Update: another very readable interview with Barry, before the Bristol show last week:

Terraneo Festival, Croatia - 10th August

Terraneo Festival
