'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will' in Japan
Mogwai's forthcoming album 'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will' is released in Japan on 2nd February 2011 by Hostess.
Digital Convenience (via Google Translate) suggests that the Japanese CD edition will include two bonus tracks AND a bonus CD. The bonus CD contains 'Music For A Forgotten Future (The Singing Mountain)', already announced as a bonus track on early editions in other territories.
Whilst full details on the various formats have yet to be published, the ever-helpful hmv japan has the previously-reported vinyl boxset (seemingly a double album plus cd package - presumably there's more to it than this if the asking price is 50 quid), a standard double album and limited double cd.
Update - the Japanese bonus tracks are:
Slight Domestic
Hasenheide
Hasenheide also appears on the b-side of the 'Rano Pano' single.

Mogwai to play 'Zidane' shows in 2011?
Stuart and Dominic were interviewed by Les Zindes during their recent European press trip.
http://www.leszindeructibles.com/2010/12/14/mogwai-linterview/:
Stuart seems to indicate that Mogwai will perform their soundtrack to the 'Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait' movie in the UK in the second half of 2011, with the possibility of further shows outside the UK if the UK dates go well.
A very exciting development, as only two tracks from the album have ever been played live (7.25 and Black Spider). The prospect of hearing 'Half Time' at full volume is filling me with pre-Christmas glee.
2011 is looking set to be a real vintage year for Mogwai fans. Bring it on.

Thirty Century Man
Thirty Century Man
Antony Crook Shoots Record-Breaking Cyclist James Bowthorpe On the Road in Norway
James Bowthorpe is the round-the-world champion cyclist who beat the previous record by an epic 20 days. This summer he found himself in the isolated Norwegian countryside in the middle of a “white” night with director Antony Crook and stylist Glenn Kitson for Crook's film 30 Century Man. "We were so far north the sun never set. I wanted the film to somehow give a sense of what James had achieved and the idea of him being alone, somewhere wild and isolated,” says Crook, who was carrying new demos by Scottish alt-rockers Mogwai at the time of filming. Listening to “How to Be a Werewolf” on repeat while driving around looking for shoot locations, he says, seemed to fit perfectly with the landscape. When Mogwai saw the footage, the group decided to remix the song, tailor-making a version exclusively for the film. The result spectacularly captures the notion of circumnavigating the earth. “We found the perfect backdrop to tell this story of somebody who points his bike at the horizon and then doesn't stop pedaling. It's a film about never giving up,” says Crook.
Antony Crook is the photographer whose work appears on the cover of Mogwai's forthcoming 'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will' album.

'Spoontest' - alternate version
As previously reported, Mogwai's third John Peel session, first broadcast in September 1998, is being repeated on Marc Riley's BBC 6Music show this week.
Tuesday night's track was 'Spoontest', but not the version featured in the original Peel session broadcast. This version features an additional vocal sample, which may well be film dialogue of some sort.
Listen again: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00w4k9n
Scroll through to 50:38
Thanks James.
Update - the vocals could well have been a discussion taking place in the Marc Riley studio via a mic left open.

Mogwai on BBC 6Music
Mogwai's third John Peel session, first broadcast in September 1998, is being repeated on Marc Riley's BBC 6Music show this week.
'Rollerball' was broadcast tonight, meaning 'Kappa', 'Spoontest' (which became the central section of 'May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door') and 'Country' (the original title for 'Cody') will feature on the other shows this week.
These recordings of 'Kappa' and 'Country' are featured on the 'Government Commissions' BBC sessions album.
This session was notable at the time for being the first publicly-available recorded versions of songs which would be feature on 1999's 'Come On Die Young' album.
Thanks James.

From Pitchfork:
Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, the new album from Scottish quiet-to-loud post-rock dons Mogwai arrives February 14 in Europe via Rock Action and February 15 in North America via Sub Pop. That's the elegant cover art above. And below, you can use a widget to download first single, the floaty five-minute instrumental "Rano Pano".
On January 18, Sub Pop will release that song as a 7" single, with non-album track "Hasenheide" as the B-side.
Pre-order the 7" from Sub Pop:

Mogwai’s seventh album and first for Sub Pop (we are thrilled) has the unbelievably great title Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, and will be released (again, by us, we’re Sub Pop) on Feb. 15, 2011. The a-side of this single, “Rano Pano,” is on that album and the b-side, “Hasenheide” is not. The cover art here is in the style of classic Sub Pop Singles Club singles. Welcome Mogwai.

Rik Rawling 'The Silence'
Many of our readers may remember that Rik Rawling was the winner of Brightlight's Artzine 2009 competition. Rik's winning entry, a painting titled 'I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead' can be found further down this post, and the other entries can be found here:
http://www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/artzine2009.php
Rik has now compiled his Mogwai-inspired artwork as a paperback book titled 'The Silence'. It's on sale via the Lulu publishing website for £7:
http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-silence/12919673
Some notes from Rik:
I've finally published the series of Mogwai paintings I did 2008-9 in book form. Title: The Silence. The book is full-colour, 32 pages, wraparound cover (using burnt Bible found in the ashes of a bonfire) and I can attest to the production values being very high.
I've also published another book, a 20-year retorspective of my work preceding (and some just after) the Mogwai paintings that proved to be such a major turning point for me. Details here.
Now the tracklist for 'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will' has been released, I'll be doing a second shorter series of paintings to coincide with its release.
Artzine 2009 was a joint Brightlight/unofficial Mogwai Forum presentation.

Remember Remember to support Mogwai in Scotland
The new Remember Remember ep 'RR Scorpii' is released by Rock Action on 1st November. Find a free mp3 of 'Get Good' from the ep on rcrdlbl.com
Remember Remember have been confirmed to support Mogwai at the five Scottish shows in January 2011.
On the subject of those Scottish dates, a number of the major ticketing websites have been overloaded with eager Take That fans today, resulting in server crashes etc. In particular, this seems to have affected the ever-impressive Seetickets, seemingly the only stockist for the Season Tickets for all five Scottish dates?
Update: the other three tracks from 'RR Scorpii' were broadcast on Subcity Radio's 'She Said' show this evening:

Further notes on today's tour dates
I stand to be corrected on any of this...
Earlier today, Mogwai announced a five-date tour of Scotland for January 2011, amongst a mountain of European, Japanese and North American dates. Full details here.
Since Mogwai last played Aberdeen, in August 1998, they've only played two Scottish headline shows outside Glasgow and Edinburgh - Rothesay (April 2001) and Inverness (May 2008). It appears highly likely that the January 2011 shows are Mogwai's first visits to Stirling, Paisley and Perth? Here's hoping a few folks dive on those Season Tickets.
Mogwai are breaking further new ground in amongst the 70 dates already announced for 2011 - first visits to Galway, Bournemouth, Nice, Gothenburg and Albuquerque.

Mogwai - 2011 tour dates
Mogwai will be bringing their awesome live show to a venue near you early next year, with shows across Scotland, Ireland, the UK, Europe, the US and Japan.
The band will begin their ‘world tour’ with a 5 show stint in their native Scotland before heading out to Japan, Ireland, UK, Europe and US. The band will play a one off show in Tokyo, Japan on February 2nd 2011 (more details to follow)
There will be a limited number of Mogwai Season Tickets allowing fans admittance to all 5 Scottish shows in January 2011 for a total cost of £65. More details on www.seetickets.com
Tickets for the new dates and Season Tickets go on sale Friday 29th October 2010 at 9am.
Tickets for the UK shows are available from http://mogwaitickets.sandbag.uk.com.
Brightlight would recommend you use this link instead of being fleeced for excessive booking and transaction fees, then offered shockingly poor customer service by Seetickets.

'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will'
MOGWAI ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM
‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’
Label: Rock Action Records
Release Date: 14th February 2011 (15th February 2011 US Release)
Mogwai are set to push the boundaries of where art meets rock even further into the abyss with the announcement that their new album, ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’ will be released on 14th February 2011 on the band’s very own Rock Action Records.
‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’, the band’s seventh album, was recorded over the summer at Chem 19 Studios, in Hamilton and mixed at The Castle Of Doom. ‘Hardcore’ is produced by Mogwai confidante Paul Savage (the man behind Mogwai’s exceptional 1997 ‘Mogwai Young Team’ album) and is the logical follow up to the band’s 2008’s magnum opus ‘The Hawk Is Howling’ and showcases Mogwai’s relentless devotion to duty and refusal to compromise sonically with it’s sheer brutally and distinctive subtle beauty.
The album will be released on February 15 2011 in the US where Mogwai have recently signed to the illustrious Sub Pop label for North America.
Tracklist:
01 White Noise
02 Mexican Grand Prix
03 Rano Pano

There will also be a Limited Edition version of the album, which includes a bonus CD featuring a 26 minute long piece called ‘The Singing Mountain’ recorded for Douglas Gordon and Olaf Nicolai’s ‘Monument for Forgotten Future’ installation in Essen, Germany.

Mogcast 9
http://radiomagnetic.com/main-features/mogcast-9-featuring-fad-gadget-clinic-and-amon-duul-ii/
Mogwai and the Rock Action team are back agin this month and heaven forbid, its Barry and John in the driving seats! Mogcast 9 features slightly tipsy Mogwai members John Cummings and Barry Burns in a celebratory mood, coming in to record the podcast mere minutes after totally finishing mixing Mogwai seventh album. Music this time around includes Fad Gadget (pictured), Robbie Basho, Jaill and Umberto but no Paul Weller at all…
And by the way, Mogwai hit the road in February playing dates throughout the UK. The magnificent Factory Floor support them in Ireland whilst Twilight Sad see the band through England and Scotland. DJ support from Konx-om-Pax at all the uK tour dates. Can Hardly wait.

As noted, mixing of the new album started today.
Update - from subpop.com:
Mogwai sign to Sub Pop for North America
We are happy and proud to announced that Sub Pop Records are releasing our next studio album in North America. The album is currently being mixed in Glasgow at Castle Of Doom studios by Paul Savage for an early 2011 release. Rock Action Records will be releasing the record in Europe with Hostess releasing in Japan.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank and pay tribute to our previous American home Matador records. They remain great friends of the band and we want to thank them for everything they have done for us over the last 11 years and wish them all the best for the future.

Mogwai - Glasgow 29th August - setlist and photos
Thanks to James Good for the setlist.
Photos by Alex Woodward @ Crimson Glow Photography.
http://krakow.zenfolio.com/mogwai0810
Mogwai's first show of 2010 took place at Stereo in Glasgow last night (Sunday 29th August), with all proceeds going to Lanarkshire Cancer Trust and to aid the victims of the floods in Pakistan.
The show saw the live debut of two new songs, listed on the setlist as 'Werewolf' and 'Sludger'. Youtube video of the latter at the end of this post. Apparently the first of these is actually titled 'How to Be a Werewolf'. Stuart introduced 'Sludger' as 'Rano Pano'.
Mogwai's longest UK show for at least two years culminated in a 30-minute 'My Father My King'. The second half of the set was notable for how little time Barry spent playing keyboards, instead treating the adoring throng to long periods of ear-torturing guitar noise whilst leaning casually against a pillar.
The show's speedy sellout meant that the posters produced by Tom Konx-Om-Pax were not needed, and they were given away at the end of the show.
Mogwai's second (and final?) 2010 show, at the Metamo Festival in Japan (4th September), should be well worth seeing.

FACT mix 179: Mogwai
http://www.factmag.com/2010/08/27/fact-mix-179-mogwai/
This Friday’s FACT mix is the work of Scottish post-rock legends Mogwai.
Formed in Glasgow in 1995, Mogwai this week released their first live package, taking in a concert recording, Special Moves and a DVD companion, Burning. It marks fourteen years of existence for the band, whose early albums Young Team and Come On Die Young represent some of the most influential music of the era – taking the long-form instrumentals of Louisville’s Slint, and injecting them with a very human, and very British melancholy and sense of humour, looking to their peers Arab Strap as well as the likes of The Cure and Fugazi for inspiration. Later in the decade, Mogwai would work with Andrew Weatherall, Alec Empire, The Manic Street Preachers and more.
The noughties would see Mogwai continue to hone their sound, reaching new peaks with tracks like ‘Glasgow Mega Snake’ and ‘Auto Rock’, while also moving into soundtracking, working with Clint Mansell on Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain and most notably, providing the score for Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, the film study of French football legend Zinedine Zidane.
Mogwai’s FACT mix was made by long-term member Barry Burns, and features The Fall, Fad Gadget, Tuxedomoon and more – you can read an interview with him about the mix and recent Mogwai goings on over the page. Special Moves / Burning is out now.
Tracklist:
Clark – Absence
Jeunesse d’Ivoire – A Gift of Tears
Tuxedomoon – What Use
Fad Gadget – Arch of the Aorta
B-52s – Dirty Back Road
Deux – Game and Performance
New Order – Video 586
Severed Heads – Dead Eyes Opened
Fever Ray – Dry and Dusty
Snowy Red – Baby Tonight
Sardine – Stuck on You
Pere Ubu – Heart of Darkness
Can – Oh Yeah
The Fall – I Am Damo Suzuki

'Come On Die Young' reissue - spring 2011
As you may have noticed, Mogwai have been pretty damn busy of late. Writing and recording a new album, promoting the 'Special Moves/Burning' package, collaborating with Douglas Gordon and Alan Moore, remixing various folks, not to mention the exemplary autumn 2010 release schedule for Rock Action.
In the midst of all this, there was talk of Chemikal Underground doing a full reissue package for 'Come On Die Young', in similar vein to 2008's 'Mogwai Young Team' Deluxe Edition.
The 'Come On Die Young' project is still in the pipeline, but for completely understandable reasons has been pushed back to spring 2011, presumably some time after the new album is released (for our less avid readers, the new album is currently scheduled for release in February 2011).
You might want to leave space on the shelf next to the 'Young Team' and 'Special Moves' boxsets. Unless you're the sort of person who doesn't file their records alphabetically by artist, in which case you're a weirdo and I don't want you reading my blog.
Thanks Stuart.

'Burning' podcasts on Soundcloud
Stuart was interviewed by Eddie Pearson for a series of three itunes-exclusive podcasts discussing Mogwai's 'Special Moves' live album and 'Burning' live film.
Eddie's kindly uploaded these to Soundcloud so non-itunes users can hear them:
http://www.mixcloud.com/celticunderground/mogwai-burning-podcast-1/
http://www.mixcloud.com/celticunderground/mogwai-burning-podcast-2/
http://www.mixcloud.com/celticunderground/mogwai-burning-podcast-3/
"Worth noting that the sound quality isn't great. Stuart's cordless phone made him sound like he was down a well. That and the fact it all had to be done in 2 hours meant that the production values are pretty low."
'Burning' excerpts
Vincent Moon has posted some further comment on 'Burning' and four video excerpts on his blog:

New album recording progress
Dominic on Twitter:
Stuart on spin.com:
FUCKING YES!! I have finished recording all my parts for the record. So I'm off home to have a celebratory whiskey and play Battlefield BC2.
Stuart on spin.com:
"We've done like eight songs, but we're starting with the drums and the bass and stuff, so I haven't done that much," admits Braithwaite, who'd been outside playing badminton with Cummings before talking to SPIN.com, while their other bandmates worked inside the studio. "But I'm really happy with how it's sounding."
"I know some of the songs are faster than they were before, but we've got 21 songs so maybe we'll lose one and we'll add one of the slow ones," he says of the music. "It's hard to tell."

Luke Sutherland at Chem19
Luke Sutherland joined Mogwai at Chem19 studios today, to record violin parts for the new Mogwai album.
I stand to be corrected on this, but I'm pretty sure this is Luke's first contribution to a Mogwai album since 'Happy Songs For Happy People'? Hopefully this means he'll also be appearing at Mogwai live shows in 2011.

The Twilight Sad 'The Wrong Car' ep
From fat-cat.co.uk:
The Twilight Sad follow their incredible ‘Forget The Night Ahead’ album with a new EP that leads with two brand new songs – ‘The Wrong Car’ and ‘Throw Yourself In The Water Again’ - from the original album sessions, and two remixes from friends Mogwai - who tackle recent single, ‘The Room’ - and Errors, who give album opener ‘Reflection Of The Television’ a distinct makeover. The latter were returning the favour after Twilight Sad’s Andy MacFarlane mixed their track ‘Bridge Or Cloud’ down to an economical glitch earlier in the year.
Track List:
The Wrong Car
Throw Yourself In The Water Again
The Room (Mogwai Remix)
Reflection Of The Television (Errors Remix)
Released 27th September on 12" and download. Pre-order at the link above.

New album recording sessions
Now into their third week, recording sessions for Mogwai's seventh studio album commenced at Chem19 Studios in Blantyre (near Glasgow) on Monday 2nd August, with Paul Savage at the controls. The album will be mixed at Castle Of Doom in October. Apparently 10 weeks of studio time has been booked over the next few months. The album is currently scheduled for release in February 2011.
The band are doing a great job of documenting what they're up to, as noted by Drowned In Sound last week:

Stuart (2nd August):
End of the 1st day back in the studio with Paul Savage since mixing Mogwai Young Team. Very happy.
mogwaiband (3rd August):
We recorded 3 songs today. Never been done before and probably never will again.
Dominic (3rd August):
Drums, bass and guitar for the first tune are now done. Moving on to John's now obligatory face melter. Working title "Batman"
Martin (6th August):
First studio injury! Pulled muscle in my arm. Should be fine by Monday. Rest of Friday off, hmmmmm..... what to do? I think I'll have a beer
Stuart (6th August):
"Speed, Weed and Meade" has just been mooted as a possible album title.
Stuart (12th August):
Barry should write a book on inappropriate studio behaviour
Stuart (13th August):
Massive pile of pedals from Dunlop/MXR/Way Huge arrived today. I fucking love my job. I got a mxr flanger, phaser, tremelo and a fuzzface.
Dominic (16th August):
Martin has just finished doing all his drums for the record. Lucky bastard.
Stuart (22nd Sept):
About to sing a really fucking depressing song you'll all be glad to hear i'm sure. Race against time to get miserable vocal recorded before leaving for the Celtic game.

Thanks Sean.
Whilst news of Mogwai shows is always welcome, it's disappointing to see so little imagination/variety/call it what you will in Mogwai's UK touring itineraries over the last five years.
[NB - these comments were made when it appeared that that the UK tour would consist only of the three dates listed above, and are unreservedly withdrawn in the light of the seven further dates confirmed subsequently - Rob]
Unless they've radically altered the interior during the recent refurbishment, Birmingham Institute is markedly smaller than the other two venues and should be first choice for those wanting to avoid the enormo-barns.

UK tour announcement this week
Am I hearing things, or did Stuart just say that Mogwai are announcing a UK tour later this week? Great news if so, let's hope it's not just three enormo-shows. Four and a half years since the last UK tour, after all.
