Mogcast 2

The second of Mogwai's podcasts has been posted today:
http://radiomagnetic.com/main-features/mogcast-2/

In this months podcast i’m joined by non-dom tax exile Barry Burns. During the podcast we were having some serious problems working the equipment which brought flashbacks of other Mogwai related technological horror shows such as my pedals giving up during the Oya festival, John’s laptop having a shit fit onstage at Glastonbury and everything stopping working altogether at Coachella.

Thankfully unlike these disasters the good folks at Radio Magnetic were able to fix all our blunders so hopefully it will just seem as if we’re getting in a tizzy about nothing. Hope you enjoy it.

Tracklist:
Severed Heads – Dead Eyes Open
Capone and Noriega – Thug Life
Tuxedo Moon – No Tears
Belong – October Language
Torche – Charge of the Brown Recluse
Dr Dooom – No Chorus
13th Floor Elevators – Slip Inside This House
The Fall – Our Future Your Clutter SHOWCASE
Electromagnetic Beam – $7 and I’m new
Aphrodite’s Child – The Four Horsemen
Abner Jay – Cocaine
Autechre – R Ess
Parliament – Come in out of the Rain
Ivor Cutler – Sharks

The Sun Smells Too Loud (James Holden mix)

As noted below, James Holden has remixed 'The Sun Smells Too Loud'. Seems the mix has done the rounds - it's included in a podcast by The Psychonauts posted on Resident Advisor in January.
http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=191
The podcast "has been archived and is currently not available" on the Resident Advisor site but can still be hear here:
http://www.mixriot.com/en/content/psychonauts-ra191-2010-01-25

I've just remembered that, during the Q&A at the 'Burning' screening last night, Stuart mentioned that an album of remixes of tracks from 'The Hawk Is Howling' was proposed but never completed.

Update: the mix will be included on James Holden's forthcoming DJ Kicks mix album: http://www.bordercommunity.com

Forget abour your worries and your stripes

Things we learned at (and after) the 'Burning' screening in Birmingham:

'Burning' is damn great.
'Burning' includes some snippets of unreleased Mogwai music.
John did a fantastic job of mixing the audio, creating dub-Gwai in the process.
Whoever came up with the idea of mixing the 'Helicon 1' outro into the 'Mogwai Fear Satan' intro is a genius.
There's an unreleased James Holden remix of 'The Sun Smells Too Loud' on YouTube (see above).
In 1996, Mogwai thought they were pretty damn clever to come up with the idea of being loud TWICE in 'Like Herod'.
After midnight, all Birmingham wants is SOUL.

I have been drinking.

Mogwai on vinyl for Record Store Day

A couple of weeks back, Mogwai announced they'd be releasing something for Record Store Day (17th April).

http://www.indierecordshop.org confirms that it's a new pressing of the tour ep from 2008:
Mogwai / Fuck Buttons “Colours Move/Mogwai Fear Satan” covering each others songs (Rock Action, 500 only)

Update: via Twitter - 500 copies on 10" vinyl. Stuart's also DJing at Monorail, Glasgow on 17th April.

Burning in Birmingham - 27th March

Final reminder:

http://www.capsule.org.uk/blog/2010/03/02/burning-at-flatpack-festival/
We’re delighted to co-host an evening with Stuart Braithwaite from MOGWAI as part of FLATPACK FESTIVAL on Sat 27th of March. We’ll be starting off with a Q & A followed by a screening of BURNING dir. Vincent Moon, a documentary of the band, filmed during their residency at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. This event starts at 20:30pm at Ikon Eastside, 183 Fazeley Street, Digbeth
Birmingham, B5 5SE Advance Tickets can be purchased from HERE

We’ll be DJing alongside Stuart at the Plasticine Party held at VIVID following the screening – more details HERE

If anyone has details on further screenings, please let me know and I'll post details here.

Update - from Digbeth Is Good:
In the evening I went to Ikon Eastside for Flatpack and Capsule’s screening of Burning, a film of Mogwai’s residency at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. I really enjoyed immersing myself in Burning, it was beautifully shot. Because I’m well hopeless when it comes to music it’s pretty much the first time I’ve sat down and listened to Mogwai, and I liked a lot – definitely a download for all those springtime canalside bike rides I have planned. It also meant I got to see Brumcast’s Little Chris in the flesh and he did a brilliant job of a friendly, relaxed interview with Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite.

Burning in Japan (take 2) - 16th June

A couple of weeks back, numerous Japanese websites were reporting 24th March as the release date for Mogwai's 'Burning/Special Moves' live album and DVD. The same websites are now reporting 16th June. Stuart's comments on the previous post suggest this is a more realistic estimate.

On an entirely unrelated note - 'Honest Strings', the Jack Rose tribute/fundraiser download compilation, has been pushed back to 23rd March. [more info]

Description
Hello. My name is Barry Burns and I'm from Glasgow (though I'm now based in cheaper, colder, weirder but certainly less violent Berlin). I'm a member of the instrumental band Mogwai from Scotland. More precisely I am the piano player and sometimes guitarist. They also even allow me to write songs.
If you haven't heard of us I'm not surprised. If you have heard of us and you like our music for whatever reason then please don't expect my mix to have loads of boring one-chord shimmering guitar "soundscapes".....my band do enough of that already along with about 40+ similar bands so instead here's a load of tunes I like to either dance to with my wife or just listen to before going out to one of those 24-hour pubs that dangerously furnish many street corners of Berlin town.
I do DJ at clubs but not nearly as much as I'd like to. This is probably a combination of the facts that I don't like asking people things and also that I'm not amazing at it.....yet. Give me 15 years and you'll all be asking for me.
Hope you enjoy the mix. Really.

Thanks Jiffy. Seems I'm a month behind on this one.

Pacemaker re-auction

As avid fans of Mogwai's medical affairs will be aware, Martin has previously auctioned two "pre-owned" pacemakers on ebay, with the proceeds going to charity.

The first of these (pictured above) is back up for sale:
ebay.co.uk/Mogwai-Drummer-Martin-Bullochs-Pacemaker-1st-Auction

This was originally auctioned in 2003, and was the inspiration for the title of 'Year 2000 Non-Compliant Cardia' on 1999's 'Come On Die Young' album.

The seller has split the original lot, and is also selling the 'Tracy' music box and 'Travels In Constants' ep seperately.

"HONEST STRINGS: A TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE AND WORK OF JACK ROSE"

Stuart mentioned this during last night's Subcity radio interview
(listen again: Subcity Radio)

From the Threelobed Recordings email newsletter:

--"HONEST STRINGS: A TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE AND WORK OF JACK ROSE"
DOWNLOAD COMPILATION COMING SOON--

It should come as no secret to anyone who reads these updates that we were pretty shocked about the December passing of our friend Jack Rose. While it has been tough around here and actions are no substitute for the man himself, we have been busy curating a download-only tribute "album" to Jack. This compilation is monstrous and insanely full of good material - it's a very fitting tribute to the man. We are currently putting some finishing technical touches on this one as we type this message but the compilation, "Honest Strings: A Tribute To The Life And Work Of Jack Rose," will be up within the next couple of week exclusively from the download portion of the Thrill Jockey site, FINA. We will send out another message on this list as soon as the compilation is available for sale. This compilation will cost $15, an absolute bargain for what you are getting, with 100% of the purchase price will go to Jack's estate. The compilation itself is, get this, six and a half hours long. Yes, you read that right. The list of featured artists is absolutely bonkers, too. Here it is, in no particular order:

Bardo Pond
D. Charles Speer
MV & EE
Rick Tomlinson
Un
Heather Leigh
Stuart Leslie Braithwaite
Nathan Bowles
Joseph Mattson - reading from "Empty The Sun"
Sunburned Hand Of The Man

Stuart and Martin on Subcity Radio

Very late notice on this one - Stuart and Martin are on Subcity Radio's 'She Said' show between 6pm and 8pm this evening.

And so it came to pass the She Said team on Subcity Radio once again strode manfully where others fear to tread with an exclusive Mogwai event this weekend. More precisely, this week's show will feature the delightful presence of Stuart Braithwaite and Martin Bulloch with a guaranteed eclectic mix of tunes and chatter. Expect the low-down on the new live film recently premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival, the bands recording and touring plans for 2010 and inevitably some left-field discussion on facial hair and favourite pets.

Oh and we're not gonna mention football, right!

Listen live: http://www.subcity.org
Listen again: http://www.subcity.org/shows/shesaid

Thanks Allan.

Cure fans invade 'Burning' premiere

A Cure fan's perspective on last night's 'Burning' UK premiere in Glasgow:

http://craigjparker.blogspot.com/2010/02/mogwai-talks-about-cure.html

The comments are worth a read too.

Anyone else attend?

Update:
stv.tv:
Tickets for the new Mogwai documentary Burning also sold out quickly. A black and white concert film shot over three nights in Brooklyn by Vincent Moon and Nat Le Scouarnec (both in attendance yesterday at the screening), the screening was followed by a special secret live DJ set by band members at Mono.

list.co.uk/

No sooner had the Gregory’s Girl crowd filed out, warmed by the spirit of classic cinematic nostalgia, then it was time for something completely different, but equally essential, with the premiere of Mogwai’s beautifully-shot black and white concert film Burning. After being “treated” to a selection of some of the worst music videos ever produced, courtesy of Mogwai’s Rock Action label (why is it that great bands are always fans of really dire music?), the muso-filled crowd lapped up the film, which was everything you would expect from the influential Glasgow band: artful, intense, sonically stunning and at points achingly self-indulgent. In person, the band are anything but pretentious though, and frontman Stuart Braithwaite hit the nail on the head in the post-screening Q&A when he said that all that really matters in music is the melody, describing conceptual music as “moribund” (a word I last heard uttered by the immortal Alan Partridge). For me, Burning reinforced the notion that Mogwai’s music works best as a purely aural experience, no matter how well constructed the accompanying images. But the crowd loved it, with sections of people spontaneously applauding throughout the film. Another great success for GFF.
