ATP film on tour

Mogwai on the big screen!

Warp Films and ATP have programmed a unique UK cinematic/live tour of the documentary ALL TOMORROW’S PARTIES screening together with a live concert from Brooklyn based art-rockers Les Savy Fav plus a DJ set by ATP founder Barry Hogan, from 23 October 2009, prior to the DVD release on 2 November 2009.

Condensing 800 hours of footage from 200 contributors including fans and musicians that have attended recent festivals, All Tomorrow's Parties is the result of a project to document the legendary cult music festival from it’s beginnings. With key contributions from co-director Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation) and cinematographer Vincent Moon (The Take Away Shows, Arcade Fire) and featuring amongst others: Belle And Sebastian, Grizzly Bear, Sonic Youth, Battles, Portishead, Daniel Johnston, Grinderman, David Cross, Animal Collective, The Boredoms, Mogwai, Slint, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip, GZA, Seasick Steve, Iggy and the Stooges, F**k Buttons, Shellac, Patti Smith John Cooper Clark and Jah Shaka.

The film’s been described as “a rousing, kaleidoscopic celebration of the seaside indie-rock festival” (Time Out), and together with Les Savy Fav’s jaw dropping stage antics, audiences will experience what happens when experimental film and music collide in these one off special events. The ‘one night only’ theatrical tour, with Les Savy Fav, will visit Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and London from Oct 23 – 28, with special events also taking place in Brighton, Bristol and Hull.

UK LIVE/THEATRICAL TOUR:

Fri Oct 23 – Manchester Deaf Institute
Sat Oct 24 – Glasgow ABC 2
Mon Oct 26 – London Forum
Tue Oct 27 – Leeds TJ’s Woodhouse Club

From mogwai.co.uk:

Hello people. I thought i'd stick something up here to assure you all that we haven't perished. We're heading to Bristol imminently for the Invada Invasion show tomorrow which will be our second last show for some time (Zaragoza is the last). While we won't be playing shows we won't be idle as we have lots of stuff to do. We're making some music for a spoken word record by my favourite comic writer of all time. We're recording a verison of Ghostrider by Suicide for a single on Blast First. We're finishing our end of the live in Brooklyn film and record, which is looking like having its premiere in November. We're also going to write and record a new album. Thanks to everyone who's came to see us play since we released The Hawk Is Howling by the way! Its been a blast. Cheers! Stuart. ps Go and buy Thriller by Part Chimp!! Its awesome!!

Competition time AGAIN!

How fast time flies. This year the unofficial Mogwai forum celebrates its 5th birthday. How to mark the occasion? Thanks to the generosity of Craig at Rock Action, a competition!

[Part Chimp's 'Thriller' album is released via Rock Action on 21st September. It rocks. UK and European tour dates: http://www.partchimp.com/gigs.html]

Back in 1998, the ever-readable Diskant asked members of the Mogwai fan community to contribute to the Mogwai Artzine, a celebration of the already widely-felt love for the band. The original Artzine is still online: http://www.diskant.net/mogwai/

I wonder whether Chris Summerlin had the vaguest idea he'd end up playing in a band with the subject of his piece. Chris has gone on to do some amazing poster and sleeve art [http://www.honeyisfunny.com/]. And whatever happened to Jon Jordan? Easy Pieces was a beautiful zine, every issue a work of art.

We felt it was time for a re-run. Submissions can be in the form of visual art, writing, photograhy, audio or video. We're open to other suggestions.

Have a look at the work submitted for the original Artzine. Marceline's introduction sums up what we're after:

"The idea for this project came to me early 1998 when I was reading a lot of fanzines with great writing about Mogwai and people would write telling me what they thought of the album or of seeing them live. I loved reading stuff and thinking, 'that's exactly how I feel', so I asked a few people to write something or do some art about how Mogwai makes them feel.

In this way, this fanzine should strike a chord with anyone who loves any music, not just Mogwai. It's more about how we turn to music, rely on music, express our emotions through music. It just seems more obvious with Mogwai because the only way to describe them is by delving into your heart."

The plan is to create a permanent archive of the work submitted for the Mogwai Artzine 2009 on Brightlight

Submitting work - part of the point of the competition is to encourage contributors to use the forum. So you'll need to join to participate in the competition. When you've done so (or if you're already a member), you'll find full instructions on the forum. http://ithica45.proboards.com

We (the forum moderators) would like to see your work first. We're hoping to get some amazing submissions. We appreciate that someone submitting, say, video may want to share this online because they're dead pleased with their work. We're also aware that there's a chance that the first submission may be so blindingly amazing that it will discourage other participants, and we want as many people to contribute as possible. So please get in touch with us first (via the forum, of course) and we'll discuss the publication of your work further.

Deadline - 30th November. We're hoping to pick a winner and get their prize out to them by Christmas.

Questions - you know the answer to this. Yep, via the forum please.

Oh, the prize? See that photo above? A box containing:

Envy - Transfovista DVD
Errors - Pump 7"
Desalvo 7"
Errors - "It's Not Something..." vinyl LP
Envy - 'Abyssal' 12"
James Orr Complex 'Chori's Bundle' vinyl LP
Kling Klang 'Superposition' 12"
Random Number 'The Fact That I Did' 12"
Part Chimp 'Chart Pimp' vinyl LP
v/a - 'Everything Is Nice' double vinyl on Matador
Todd/Part Chimp/Lords/Hey Colossus split 10"
Mogwai - 'Hawk Is Howling' double vinyl
Mogwai - 'Zidane' double vinyl
Mogwai - Travels In Constants CDep

PLUS a t-shirt and hoodie to be added once we have the winner's size.
AND a pair of the cloth patches produced to promote Mogwai's 'Mr Beast'
album.
AND a pair of Brightlight badges.

Jesus, we spoil you.

Thanks Craig, you rock.

From Ghosts

From http://ourtrueintent.com/?p=302

Vincent Moon is currently finishing the edit of From Ghosts, a film shot at last years My Bloody Valentine curated New York ATP. These clips are an amazing reminder of an incredible festival, that one Pitchfork reporter called “the most enjoyable festival experience I’ve ever had”.

Exclusive clips from this forthcoming new short, are showing for one week only on Pitchfork TV. This 35 minute short will be released alongside our feature doc ALL TOMORROW’S PARTIES this Autumn.

The clip above includes an excerpt from Mogwai's performance of 'Mogwai Fear Satan' at the ATP-NY festival.

The 'All Tomorrow's Parties' documentary includes Mogwai's performance of 'Sinewave' from the ATP 'Director's Cut' festival, held at Camber Sands in 2004.

Update: the video has gone because Pitchfork TV took it down.

Cody (CaVa version)

Added to the music player at http://www.myspace.com/mogwai:

Cody (CaVa version)

A finished version of the song, recorded in Glasgow, prior to the sessions for 'Come On Die Young' with Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios.

Hopefully this is the first indicator of what's likely to appear as extra content on the long-mooted reissue of 'Come On Die Young'.
