Competition - a winner at last!

The poster will be making the long journey to New Zealand after our winner correctly predicted that Mogwai would perform four tracks from The Hawk Is Howling at last night's show in Brooklyn.

Introspective

In the Spanish music documentary Introspective, young director Aram Garriga traces the trail of post-rock, a term coined in the second half of the 1990s by the renowned music magazine The Wire. Thus, a new label was found for a musical genre which included all the bands that previously had been eluding every musical definition (and which therefore were considered as barely marketable). In addition to numerous live clips from bands such as Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Mogwai and Mouse on Mars, this movie also features interviews with indie rock stars such as Thurston Moore, Ira Kaplan, Noel Gallagher, Stuart Braithwaite and many more.

Adam Garriga was born in Barcelona in 1979. He studied Audiovisual Communication and received a research fellowship at the University of Barcelona. He graduated with the award-winning short filmlet "The King is Dead" (2001). Since 2001, Garriga has been working as a cutter, screenplay writer and director. He has created numerous music and image videos. He also founded the production company theVisualSuspects in 2005."

Apparently the documentary was released in 2007. Wonder whether it's been released on DVD?

Thanks to Markus for translating the piece above from German.

Competition update again.

So this has rumbled on to Brooklyn. Unfortunately the first two tracks in last night's Mogwai show in Philadelphia foxed our two remaining plucky players again.

A fifth (sixth?) tie-breaker has been set:

*Predict how many tracks from The Hawk Is Howling will be played at the first Brooklyn show on Monday.

Linz - 31st May

Mogwai's previously-reported appearance at Linzfest in Linz, Austria is confirmed by the publication of the event poster:

http://www.linz.at/images/LINZF120_posterA2_2009.pdf

As Mogwai already have shows on 30th May and 1st June, their appearance at Linzfest must be on 31st May. The poster also confirms that this is a free event, part of Linz's programme as European Capital Of Culture 2009, and takes place in Donaupark.

Barry vs Laurent

From Asheville Citizen Times:

Q: What future projects are you currently working on?

Barry: I'm doing a remix for Laurent Garnier, which I'm very pleased with although it sounds nothing like Mogwai (a good thing in this instance) and we may have some unusual stuff coming up but, as always, it'll probably fall through. These things often do.

Matador vinyl masters lost

From The Quietus:

If tracking down a copy of your favourite album on vinyl wasn't hard enough, Matador Records have admitted that the bankruptcy of American pressing plant 33 1/3 has ensured a large portion of their vinyl back catalogue has been binned.

According to The Guardian, vinyl masters of albums by Mogwai, Yo La Tengo and Cat Power were lost when 33 1/3 went out of business in 2006.

"Nothing was recovered from 33 1/3," Matador’s director of production, Jesper Eklow, said. "We lost everything. The doors were locked due to the Chapter 11 bankruptcy".

Matador had planned on reissuing popular albums on high-quality vinyl, but the closure of 33 1/3 has seen the loss of "pretty much everything up to May 2006".

Competition - round 3

The closing track of the main set at last night's Mogwai show in Birmingham, AL was correctly predicted by two of our remaining three plucky players.

A third tie-breaker has been set:

*Name the songs to be played during the encore at tonight's show in Asheville.

I reckon we can make this last to Brooklyn at least.

On a side note - it seems that a couple of emails in connection with the competition didn't get through. If you've sent anything to rob-bl@youngteam.co.uk recently and haven't had a response, please try again as I'd like to find whether this is a one-off or a major issue.

Competition - round 2

The opening track at last night's Mogwai show in Houston took all of our competition entrants by surprise.

Three lucky souls, all of whom managed a complete sweep of tracks played last night but missed on the opener, have been set a second tie-breaker:

*Name the last song of the main set at Wednesday's show in Birmingham, AL.

I wonder if I can manage to make this competition last for the whole US tour?

Competition time again

There have been many great posters produced for Mogwai shows over the years (see Gigposters for more examples). Particularly notable have been those designed by Igor Hofbauer for the shows in Zagreb, Croatia.

Thanks to Igor's generosity, Brightlight is pleased to be able to give away ONE copy of the poster above. Approx 38" by 26", 'normal' poster print (rather than a screen print). Please note - it has been carefully folded four times by Igor prior to posting.

In the absence of any flash of creative inspiration, the competition is a reprise of a previous poster giveaway.

Mogwai's US tour starts in Houston on Monday (20th April).
*Name five songs you think will feature in Mogwai's set in Houston.
*Tiebreaker - name the opening song.

Lists to rob-bl@youngteam.co.uk by 5pm (UK) on Monday 20th April. I reserve the right to bring the deadline forward, or change the competition, if the setlist becomes obvious before Monday for whatever reason.

If anyone has any decent ideas for future competition questions or prizes, please get in touch.

update: Competition closed. Lucky 13 entries. Results in the morning when I get the setlist.

The twice-postponed radio broadcast of Mogwai's recent Strasbourg show (12th Feb) has been rescheduled for Weds 15th April (22.30 - 23.30). Looks like it might happen this time, as PIAS have given authorisation.

Linz, 29th or 31st May?

http://www.linz.at/kultur/linzfest.asp has Mogwai amongst the bands playing at this year's LinzFest in Linz, Austria. The festival runs from 29th May to 1st June. Mogwai's published touring schedule has shows confirmed for 30th May and 1st June, so the LinzFest show must be on either Fri 29th May or Sun 31st May.

On a side note - this made me laugh:

Crippled Black Phoenix tour underway

The Crippled Black Phoenix US tour started in Chicago on 2nd April and finishes in Atlanta on 18th April
http://www.myspace.com/crippledblackphoenix

From donewaiting.com:

Q: You’ve got a rotating cast of contributors to CBP. Who will be in the touring band and are you making any compromises due to economic factors (like, will you be bringing over fewer band members because travel costs are too high?)?

A: We’re touring with the medium size band, we won’t have the two drumkits or the brass and violin, but we will have the cello, piano, synth/organ plus the normal guitars/bass drums set up, there’s 8 players this time, so we haven’t stripped things down at all really, we want to do the loud set….and that we shall do. Dominic is unclear whether he’ll make al the shows due to the fact that Mogwai are starting their tour on the last day of ours, it’s frustrating for both of us, especially when we had this tour booked for months and the Mogwai machine takes Dominic away at the last minute. We also have a new guitarist, Karl, he is just too bloody good actually, we may have to make him a bit more sh-t like the rest of us! Putting together this tour has almost destroyed me, but i just couldn’t give up on it, so many things have tried to prevent it or tell me it won’t happen, but faced with complete failure, utter defiance is the only response.

Ticket bundle update

Via the Matablog:

We got pretty excited about the upcoming Mogwai tour so we created a special bundle for those of you who haven’t picked up The Hawk Is Howling yet.

If you buy a bundle, you will receive a ticket for the Mogwai show of your choice and receive the deluxe CD/DVD version of The Hawk Is Howling in your mailbox. You get the ticket you want for the regular price and the album you need with a generous discount. Make sure to print out your order confirmation and bring it with you to the show, you’ll be on the Matador guest list for the night!

A good deal then - the bundle price is around $10 more than the standard ticket prices but avoids the charges piled on by major ticket outlets (presumably - if this is wrong, please let me know). And The Hawk Is Howling CD/DVD is worth less than $10 of anyone's money.
