20th anniversary compilation

Thanks to Alejandro for pointing out that, at the end of this interview with The Argus, Stuart mentions plans to mark Mogwai's 20th anniversary in 2015.

After nearly 20 years Mogwai are beginning to look back. Next year should see an anniversary compilation with “harder to find things” and vinyl reissues of every Mogwai record.

Referring to the compilation’s track list, he jokes “It’s an ongoing discussion, but it’s probably the easiest record we’ll ever make.”

1st September - Mogwai Song Title Day

From nme.com:
"We got drunk on the train on Monday and thought of some great song titles," Braithwaite said. "They’re secret for now, but it means we’ve got some great names – just no music to go with them yet."

Braithwaite added that Mogwai’s soundtrack album for the first series of The Returned sold better than the band’s most recent regular album, 2013’s 'Rave Tapes'. "We must have done something right with that soundtrack," Braithwaite said. "The second series hasn’t been filmed yet, but the storylines we’ve seen look great. We’ve started writing music for that, and we’re sure it’s going to go great."

Mogwai at Glastonbury on the BBC

Mogwai play Glastonbury Festival on Saturday 28th June, headlining the Park Stage (23:00 - 00:15)

2014 marks the tenth anniversary of John Peel's last appearances amongst the BBC presenters at Glastonbury. Still very much missed.

BBC coverage is usually extensive and high quality. Excerpts from Mogwai's set are already scheduled to feature on Stuart Maconie's BBC 6Music show (Saturday, 21:00 - 00:00). If Mogwai's last Glastonbury appearance in 2003 is anything to go by, we can expect extensive BBC 6Music rebroadcasts of excerpts from the set for the next ten years.

Hopefully Mogwai's set will be broadcast on one of the BBC's 'Red Button' extra digital TV channels.

Thanks Markus. If anyone sees further info on Mogwai coverage, please get in touch.

Coverage of Mogwai's 2014 festival appearances has ranged from the exceptional (ARTE Concert at Primavera Sound) to the awful (101tv's shoddy low-quality webcast from last weekend's Best Kept Secret festival in the Netherlands) to non-existent (barely a mention of Bad Bonn Kilbi anywhere online).

Metallica: Are Shite

http://www.gigwise.com/news/91452/mogwai-discuss-thoughts-on-clashing-with-metallica-at-glastonbury:
Mogwai have spoken out about their opinion of Metallica headlining Glastonbury this year - saying that they don't see the fuss, but do think they're 'shite'.

The Scottish post-rock icons are set to perform at the same time as Metallica at this year's festival, and speaking to Gigwise backstage at Primavera Sound, explained their opinion of the metal heroes.

"I can't wait to hear that guy play the drums again - unbelievably bad," said multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns. "He's terrible."

Singer Stuart Braitwaite continued: "I just can't wait until we go all quiet and you can hear 'Enter Sandman' in the background, because we're on at the same time. I don't really see the fuss. They're a pretty big rock band and it's a pretty big rock festival.

"It would be good if they could go back in time to 1989. Metallica at Glastonbury in 1989

When put to the band their booking had proven controversial, drummer Martin Bulloch added: "Because they're shite."

North American tour starts today

Come On Die Young - Deluxe Edition - 16th June

Finally, fifteen years after its original release and five years after preparations began on this version, Mogwai's 'Come On Die Young' is set for the reissue and boxset treatment.

As far as Chemikal Underground releases go, there are few, if any, that deserve the red carpet treatment more than Mogwai's dark masterpiece from 1999. A landmark release for the label, 'CODY' carved a path for us that we've strived to follow for nearly 20 years.

Official Press Release

Arriving in March 1999 with an album cover that referenced The Exorcist and a title scalped from a well-known Glasgow gang slogan, you’d have expected Mogwai’s ‘Come On Die Young’ to be an apocalypse-harbouring, pre-millennial assault on the senses.

Instead, we were treated to a darkly elegiac – surprisingly restrained – response to the aural fireworks of their ‘Young Team’ debut from two years earlier. Recorded and mixed at Dave Fridmann's Tarbox Road Studios in Upstate New York, ‘Come On Die Young’ begins with a sample of Iggy Pop eulogising the genius of punk rock and ends with a track entitled ‘Punk Rock/Puff Daddy/Antichrist’. This thoughtful and irreverent diptych would enclose an hour of music that was as beautiful as it was blistering and as poignant as it was unpredictable: preconceptions of what to expect from a Mogwai album, disassembled at a stroke.

‘Come On Die Young’ was - and remains – a hugely accomplished, elegant and important album, setting a benchmark for the fierce intelligence that would go on to characterise Mogwai’s future body of work.

This reissue of ‘Come On Die Young’ - fifteen years after it originally hit the shelves – recognises the vital role the album played in Chemikal Underground’s own development as the label approaches its 20th anniversary in 2015. This deluxe edition of ‘Come On Die Young’ has been painstakingly assembled by band and label, unearthing more than an hour of bonus material which includes:

• Previously unreleased takes from early Chem19 sessions of 'Waltz For Aidan’, ‘Christmas Steps’, ‘Rollerball’ and ‘7-25’ which would later feature on ‘Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait’.
• Seven remixed and remastered album tracks from the CAVA recording sessions which pre-dated the definitive recordings laid down at Tarbox.
• Two previously unreleased tracks ‘Satchel Panzer’ and ‘Spoon Test’.
• Rarities ‘Nick Drake’, ‘Hugh Dallas’ and the 3 track ‘Travels In Constants EP’.
• The original, previously unreleased version of ‘Helps Both Ways’.
• A1 ‘San Siro’ poster for Mogwai’s Barrowland Ballroom show from October ’99.
• Boxset includes 4 x 180gsm LPs featuring the original 2LP and 2LP of bonus material.
• Two Chem19 Demos are exclusive to the boxset: ‘Christmas Steps’ and ‘7-25’.
• Boxset includes a download code for all audio within the boxset.

“Sometimes 'CODY' is kind, sometimes it is cruel and at many times it is lovingly, leeringly abstract. Because this is Mogwai in full, frazzled, fantastic effect. Live fast. Play slow. Die Young.”

Many thanks to the numerous folks who've already taken the time to contribute to documenting Mogwai's 2014 tour dates in the gigography.

Your poem set to music by Mogwai?

From The Westmorland Gazette:
BUDDING poets in Cumbria have been asked to pen an ode to lift the lost village of Mardale Green from the bed of Haweswater and win the chance of a lifetime to have their work set to music by rock royalty Mogwai. The competition has been launched by CultureNL, a charity that runs North Lanarkshire Libraries, which has invited libraries in Cumbria and Gwnedd in Wales to take part in the event that centres on the theme of drowned villages - something common to all three areas.

Open until February 24, all entrants must be aged 14 or over and library members in one of the three regions. Entries can be emailed or handed in to libraries.

The best poem will be put to music by cult Scottish band Mogwai, which provided the much-acclaimed soundtrack for the recent Channel 4 drama The Returned - a ghost story based around a reservoir which had been created by drowning the local valley village.

The judging panel is Scotland’s national poet, Liz Lochhead and Nicky Wire, bassist in Manic Street Preachers. There is also to be a third regional judge representing Cumbria.

Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite said: “The drowned village poetry competition really appealed to us on many levels. I think that inspiring people to write poetry is wonderful and the opportunity to accompany it with my music was too good to pass by. I also feel that supporting libraries is absolutely essential. They are vital for our communities and have to be cherished and protected.”

Coachella - 12th and 19th April 2014

Mogwai are amongst the artists playing Coachella 2014, listed to perform on Saturday 12th April and Saturday 19th April.

The first of these dates is a full week before the US tour kicks off, so presumably further shows will be announced between 12th April and 19th April.
