Competition - a winner already!

The competition set last weekend, to win a copy of Rik Rawling's book of paintings 'The Silence', has a winner already - Graham Burgess, who correctly picked five tracks that Mogwai would perform last night in Stirling, and also correctly predicted the opening track as 'White Noise'.

Thanks to everyone who entered. The absence of 'I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead' from the setlist seems to have been the biggest surprise.

Rik's most recently completed painting, 'I Know You Are But What Am I?' is here:

Mogwai - BBC Radio 1 session

As noted below, Mogwai recorded a session for BBC Radio 1 on Monday (24th Jan).

The session is intended for broadcast on Rob Da Bank's show, which airs between 5am and 7am on Saturday morning.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wknd
There's nothing on the site to indicate a likely transmission date. If anyone sees a date published, please let me know.

A further two tracks were recorded "for whoever wants them" - thanks Stuart.

==============================================
Editorial

It's to be hoped Mr da Bank doesn't repeat his 2008 trick of turning off the session recording of 'Mogwai Fear Satan' halfway through.

Anyone else yearning for the days when Mogwai sessions were on Radio 1 in the evening?

Stirling - my kinda town

Mogwai's lengthy run of tour dates starts tonight (Weds 26th Jan) with a sold-out show in Stirling. The tour continues with four further Scottish shows. Japan, Ireland, UK, Europe, USA and Canada follow between now and May.

Stuart and Barry are DJ-ing in Glasgow tonight after the Stirling show. More info:
synergyconcerts.com

Posted yesterday on http://twitter.com/mogwaiband/:

BBC Radio 1 session yesterday. Last rehearsal today before the tour starts tomorrow. 5 gigs in Scotland and 2 in Japan in 9 days. Here we go.

Anyone know whose show the Radio 1 session was recorded for?

Vic Galloway session - final track

Mogwai were in session for BBC Radio Scotland's Vic Galloway show last Monday (17th Jan). A fourth track, 'How To Be A Werewolf', was recorded for broadcast at a later date, and it was included in tonight's show.

Competition time again

'The Silence', the book collecting all 21 paintings from Rik Rawling's Project Mogwai, was published in September 2010.

Rik has kindly given me a copy of the book to use as a competition prize.

In the absence of any flash of creative inspiration, the competition is a reprise of two previous poster giveaways.

Mogwai's Scottish tour starts with a sold-out show in Stirling on Wednesday (26th January).

*Name five songs you think will feature in Mogwai's set in Stirling.
*Tiebreaker - name the opening song.

Lists to rob-bl@youngteam.co.uk by 5pm (UK) on Wednesday 26th January. I reserve the right to bring the deadline forward, or change the competition, if the setlist becomes obvious before Wednesday for whatever reason.

Bearing in mind what happened last time, please don't expect an immediate conclusion to the fun (for new readers, the last competition ended up rumbling on through two weeks of shows before a winner emerged).

Rik's recently started work on a second set of Mogwai-influenced paintings:
http://rikrawling.wordpress.com/2011/01/07/folk-death-95/
as well as his Mogwai sleeve art 'remixes':
http://rikrawling.wordpress.com/2010/11/12/mogwai-covers-remixed/

Update: competition closed, thanks to those who've entered.

'Hardcore..' - Sub Pop pre-order

http://www.subpop.com/releases/mogwai/full_lengths/hardcore_will_never_die_but_you_will

The first 500 pre-orderers of Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will will receive a set of earplugs in a limited edition Mogwai earplug case!

This Deluxe Version of the CD comes with a second disc featuring an epic 23 minute song not on the album. The download code that accompanies the LP includes that 23 minute track, though it’s not actually on the vinyl version.

Released: February 15, 2011

CD - $16
2XLP - $18

Pre-ordering gets you access to a stream of the whole album, I believe.

Sub Pop already seem to have sent more email, blogged more, ....advertised, I suppose it used to be called....'Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will' more widely than I can recall Matador doing for any of the Mogwai albums during Mogwai's time on that label.

Live update

From twitter.com/plasmatron:

We played our whole new album from start to finish at rehearsal today. A feat that deserves at the very least some biscuits. Or medals.

Presumably this means Mogwai are intending to play the entire album live this year, breaking further new ground - every Mogwai studio album includes tracks that were never played live at the time of release. The only studio album performed live in its entirety to date is Mogwai Young Team, at two shows in 2008.

Luke Sutherland is to join the band for their forthcoming tour dates, presumably reprising his previous appearances with the band on violin and guitar.

And finally, a reminder that Stuart plays one of his rare solo shows at the Shhh... Festival in London tomorrow (Saturday 22nd Jan). Stuart's scheduled for a 30 minute set from 8.30pm

Never lost in translation: Mogwai in Japan

Great interview with Mogwai whilst they were in Japan in September 2010. Unusual in that it includes contributions from the whole band, and the interviewer obviously knows the band's music well.

Dialogue in 'You're Lionel Richie'

From Stefano Fasti, who's had an early listen to 'You're Lionel Richie' on YouTube:
I translated the Italian dialogue for you.

00:30 - a few words not in Italian and really not understandable...

00:46 - "Disse che l'aveva trovato: voleva uccidere il lupo. Ma il lupo non morì mai. Doveva mordersi nella sua pelle. perché stava pensando, disse la foresta, stava pensando un modo per farlo guarire quel povero leone"

In English:

"He(/she) said that he(/she) found him: he(/she) wanted to kill the wolf. But the wolf never died. He (the wolf) should bite his own skin... because he(/she) was thinking about, said the forest, he(/she) was thinking about a way to make him heal, that poor lion"

It seems clear to me that the speaker is surely not Italian, maybe French? But I can't be sure of his nationality. It's a very cryptic short tale and I haven't managed to find its author yet. I don't know if these are only excerpts from a longer story. The passage from the wolf to the lion is very strange and I can't understand the change of subject. Yes, very cryptic. Even if I am absolutely sure of the words spoken in Italian.

Thanks Stefano.
Maybe this is film dialogue? Anyone know?
